1998 Season
Despite batting .303 and .302 in the previous two seasons, Joe Randa was left unprotected in the expansion draft by the Pirates. The Diamondbacks took him, then sent him, fellow third baseman Gabe Alvarez and righthander Matt Drews to the Tigers for Travis Fryman. Randa started out slowly in 1998 and never recovered. He was benched in June when Alvarez was called up, but closed the season as a regular after Alvarez injured his thumb.
Hitting, Baserunning & Defense
Last season aside, Randa can hit for average. But he's not close to being the run producer clubs want in a corner infielder. He commits his share of errors, and they usually come in bunches. His range is limited at third base, but his hands are sure and his arm is accurate. He performed adequately when used at second base last season. Randa's speed is a little below average.
1999 Outlook
The Tigers traded Randa to the Mets for Willie Blair in an exchange of disappointments, and New York sent him to the Royals for minor league outfielder Juan LeBron. Randa will start at third base for Kansas City, his original organization.
