Scouting Report From ESPN
1998 Season
After going 3-for-17 in April and receiving a one-way ticket to Triple- A Durham, Bubba Trammell returned to the majors at the All-Star break. He batted .297-11-34 in 182 second-half at-bats to boost both his confidence and his stock among Devil Rays officials, who had made him a first-round pick in the expansion draft.
Hitting, Baserunning & Defense
The Rays know Trammell is going to swing and miss, which is typical of a young power hitter. What was impressive was how he shortened his stroke and improved his plate discipline while in the minors. He can sit on the best of fastballs and drive them, but offspeed pitches still can fool him. Trammell isn't a smooth defensive player, but can get by in left or right field and has a strong if not tremendously accurate arm. He's best suited to DH duties, but the Rays already have a crowd of candidates there. Trammell isn't fast but is a decent baserunner.
1999 Outlook
The Rays are desperate for righthanded power and and chose to sign free agent Jose Canseco rather than give Trammell the chance to play regularly. He'll have to settle for being a reserve.
